Smart Watch – The First Look

Could this year be the one where the Smart Watch truly comes of age? There’s something about watches and out-of-the-world powers that have appealed to the reader and movie watcher for so long. James Bond and Dick Tracy are just two of the names that come to mind but we could have endless debates about smart watches.  But while there have been conversations and devices, the concept hasn’t caught on in a big way.

It makes sense to be able to wear technology. Think about it. We carry technology, in all kinds of sizes. So why not wear it as well?  Do remember a smartwatch isn’t just a watch but does a lot more. So be clear on what you’re looking for. A music player for your train rides to work or for your workout? Or maybe a substitute for your phone if that’s possible? Endless possibilities when it comes to the smartwatch. This year again, the CES in Las Vegas attracted its fair share of smart watches  and the buzz around smart watches has started again. Let’s take a look at the ones that have caught our attention.

Pebble

This is a completely customizable watch that works better, so much better with apps. Download whatever you need- change the look of your watch face, use GPS to show you distance, pace data and speed and use the smartwatch to track fitness. And there’s music control that lets you skip tracks, pause and play tracks as well.

The 1.26” screen uses e-paper technology that lets you look at the screen even in the brightest of days. The battery will last up to a week and Pebble is water resistant. Use Bluetooth to get in touch with your Android or iPhone and use Pebble to email, check your messages and use Twitter and Facebook. The Pebble watch comes in eye-popping colors, including orange and red and you swap the watch strap depending on your mood.

I’m Watch

This is a seriously good looking watch with a touch screen that you can pinch, swipe and drag your way through. It syncs with Apple and Android and works almost like your smartphone; you can take calls with the touch of a button. I’m Watch will let you receive emails, notifications and texts. You can listen to music, check your calendar or the weather and your photographs.

Stay fit better with this smartwatch. This device keeps track of your workout with sensors that measure all sorts of things including skin temperature, sleep patterns and heart rate. You will also know how active you’ve been in your workout because this watch tells you how much you’ve sweated it out in your workout. It does not sync with iOs app or Android right now though there are plans underway. The data collected can be seen through a Web interface.

Martian

This is an incredible watch that gives you hands-free voice communication. Not just talk, you can give voice commands, listen to calls, you’ll be told about receiving calls and texts, without having to deal with your phone at all. Use Bluetooth to connect it to your phone and you can actually make phone calls- something you won’t see the other smart watches do.

Need more? We’re hearing rumors that Apple might launch the iWatch, its own smartwatch. Watch this space.
